Christmas Assurance - Divine Orchestration - Monday, December 19th
Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Luke 2:1-3
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Paying taxes is an age old issue. The Roman Empire conducted the world wide census to maximize the flow of tax money back to Rome and the various governors throughout the empire. Registering for the census was non-negotiable as was paying the tax requirements that came about from the census. Make no mistake that this census was a big deal. It was initiated and carried out by powerful people and very high stakes in regard to its success were involved.
Today's passage includes these words, "everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city." Everyone was complying with the decree because of how big a deal it was to do otherwise. However, was there anyone who grasped how big a deal this census was in the grander scheme of what God was going to accomplish through it? Probably not. Any yet the census became the means for the Messiah to come at just the right moment, in just the right way, and in just the right place. Psalm 103:19 says, "The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all."
The Christmas story begins with a decree by the most power man in the world which the God of heaven commandeers for purposes far greater and far more lasting than the Roman Empire itself. What a great reminder to us that our Sovereign God rules over every detail of our lives and we can trust him with absolute confidence and assurance that we are in his unfailing hands now and always.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, forgive me for underestimating how capable you are and for not resting confidently in the security of your powerful and gentle hands. Please use this week leading into Christmas to build my faith and strengthen my assurance that all is well with my soul and that all I truly need has been bestowed on me through the gift of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen!
