And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 2 Timothy 2:5

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. Ephesians 4:1-3

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:15-17

Coaching tip # 4 is: Be careful. This is the 4th of 5 coaching tips the Apostle Paul gave Timothy that will help us be strong and compete well in the game of life (for a fuller context review Monday's devotional). While we trust Christ to order our lives and to live in and through us by means of the Holy Spirit, it is in and through us. We are told in Scripture to walk in step with the Spirit. My life and walk are my walk and life, not any other person's. I must be attentive, I must be alert, and I must be careful. There is nothing passive or inactive about living a life that is dependent upon the indwelling presence and strength of Christ who indwells me through the Holy Spirit. Like athletes we must pay careful attention to our race and be diligent to follow the rules. We run the race in a wise and worthy way but in full awareness of Christ who fills us with his presence and strength.

Lord, we admit that finding the blend between you and us for how we go about competing well in the game of life is no easy thing. Help us to take charge of our lives by letting you be in charge. Help us to be attentive, alert, and careful about how we walk our walk. Guard us from short cuts and may sportsmanship be our hallmark. May we be active and enterprising and yet dependent and yielded in every way to you and your desires for us. Fill us with the thrill of living fully for you you.
