Saturday, October 31st

After a long time the owner of those servants came back. He wanted to know what had been done with his money. The one who had received the five pieces of money worth much came and handed him five pieces more. He said, "Sir, you gave me five pieces of money. See! I used it and made five more pieces." His owner said to him, "You have done well. You are a good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things. I will put many things in your care. Come and share my joy." Matthew 25:19-21 (NLV)

There are so many helpful things in today's passage. Let's begin with the words, "You have been faithful." The owner  of this servant is saying he considers him to be reliable because he properly took care of the responsibility that was entrusted to him. This is what it means to be faithful. God is our owner and he has entrusted to us the responsibility of living a fruitful, sanctified life of service to him and other people. God is faithful to us and gives himself in full measure so that we have everything we need to succeed in everything he has entrusted to us. God's faithfulness to his people leads to his people having the fruit of faithfulness.

Our passage says that the time had come for the servant to give account to his owner. We are moving toward a culminating point when we will give account to God for how we took care of the responsibility of living a fruitful, sanctified life of service to him and other people which he entrusted to us. We hope for words to be said to us like the servant's owner said to him, "You have done well. You are a good and faithful servant." It is interesting that the two elements of the fruit of the Spirit we are considering this week are the two elements that God recognizes as the marks of a life that is successfully lived for him.

One more thing from our passage to consider are the words, "Come and share my joy." Hebrews 12:2 says these words about Jesus, "who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." God sets joy before us as well. We must keep Jesus and joy in our sights as we seek to live "good" and "faithful" lives of genuine service to God and others. It is the prospect of sharing God's joy in eternity that helps us sacrificially sidestep all that is not "good" for all that being "faithful" to God entails.

Lord, guard me from pursuing faithfulness with the absence of goodness. I recognize that I can be dedicated to wrong things. Guard me as well from claiming goodness with the absence of faithfulness. I recognize that I must walk my talk. Lord, I really need you big time for all this to work out the way it should in the end. While, hearing those words, "well done" would mean a lot, what they signify would mean even more. It would mean that my life glorified you, Lord. I ask that you would bring it to pass. Amen!
