The Birth of Christ - A Divine Conception and A Divine Savior - Thursday, December 15th

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

Today we turn our attention to these words from our passage: "the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son." We are told that these words were previously spoken by the Lord through the prophet. The prophet is Isaiah and the words were recorded centuries before in Isaiah 7:14. With the conception and birth of Jesus Christ this prophecy was fulfilled. Many reasons have been put forth for why all this was a necessary part of the birth of Christ. In reality there is only one: without a Divine conception there cannot be a Divine person. A human father and a human mother will always result in a human conception and the birth of a human person.

To put it another way, the only way God the Son could take on human form was for God the Father to be the actual cause of the conception that came about in Mary's womb. The angel in Luke 1:35 described it in this way to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God." Without a Divine conception and birth we don't have Jesus Christ here on earth in the flesh. If we don't have Jesus Christ here on earth in the flesh, we don't have a Savior to "save His people from their sins." Without our being saved from our sins God cannot reclaim a lost humanity for himself (to live for his glory and his purposes) and everyone perishes in the absence of eternal life.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, I bow before you today in worship and adoration. What an amazing event the birth of Christ really is. Help me enter fully into all that Christmas really is. I get it: Christmas gives us the one who sets everything in order and makes everything right. Thank you for the awe inspiring measures that were taken for us to have a Divine Savior who takes care of everything. Amen!
