So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father. For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. Romans 8:15-16

The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music. Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming" .... Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord. Psalm 27:4-8, 13-14

The Romans passage contrasts the spirit of a fearful slave with the spirit that should be true of us as God’s children. The psalm describes the child of God who is no longer a slave to his circumstances but is living in full reality of his being a child of God. As such, he experiences fully the relationship he has with his Heavenly Father while in the midst of difficult and potentially overwhelming life circumstances.

Help us Lord to be comfortable in your presence and love but help us not to be comfortable with anything less than transformed lives. Lord, deliver us from joy based solely on having the circumstances we want. Grant that we may increasingly know the joy of a prayer relationship with you that is first and foremost about drawing near to you and knowing you, Lord.
