For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News. 2 Timothy 1:9-10
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Yesterday we talked about "Good News" moving us from a place of fear to a place of joy. Today's verses are a great follow up for helping us with this need. The "Good News" is this: Jesus took the place of fear for us. The place of fear is the place of judgement and the place of judgement is the cross. Jesus took our place on the cross (a place only he could take) and let the judgment of sin fall on himself. Our verses tell us that "He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time." Additionally, our verses tell us that by doing this "He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality."
Truly it was God's plan "to show us his grace through Christ Jesus" and truly, "He has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior." The birth of Christ, that first Christmas, was truly "Good News" and it is truly "good news that will bring great joy to all people." For those who enter into the "Good News" of who he is and what he has done, there is no longer a place of judgment for them. This is why "Good News" moves us from a place of fear to a place of joy, forever.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I know I have entered into the "Good News" of who are and what you have done for me. I know I am forgiven and you are my forever Savior. But somehow, it seems that fear has slipped into my life and smothered my joy. Like David, the Psalmist of long ago, I ask you to "Restore to me the joy of your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit" (Psalm 51:12). Amen!
