Tuesday, February 9th

If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 1 Peter 1:17-21 (NASB)

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

It is not uncommon for people to come to Christ and receive the forgiveness of sins but be unprepared for the plan God has for their lives. This week is all about getting to the spot where we are totally prepared for going forward with God’s plan for our lives. We continue in 1 Peter today. Yesterday, we were admonished to be obedient children who seek to be holy in all our behavior. If we have come to Christ and received the forgiveness of sins, then we are God’s children. According to today’s Scripture, as God’s children, we address him as Father.

If God is our Father, what should that mean for our lives? Could it be that we have some faulty understandings of what it means to have God as our Father that have contributed to our being unprepared for the life of holiness we have been called to? Before you came to Christ you were like a kid on the street running around doing whatever you wanted. But now as a child of God you are in your Heavenly Father’s household and he is committed to seeing that “your futile way of life” is replaced by a “holy life.”

This is why we were redeemed and received the forgiveness of sins. Our Heavenly Father is in the business of orchestrating a life of holiness for each of his children. This supersedes anything and everything we might want our Heavenly Father to be to us. He is constantly examining (impartiality judging) the effort (each one’s work) we are putting into a holy life throughout our lifetime (during the time of your stay here on earth). All along the way our Heavenly Father will do whatever it takes to see holiness come about in our lives.

In speaking of our Heavenly Father, Hebrews 12:6 says, “for those whom the Lord loves he disciplines” and Hebrews 12:10 says, “He disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.” Read through today’s passage again and let the extent of what God did to secure your redemption sink in. Then, let the extent of what God is committed to do to orchestrate a life of holiness for you sink in. Finally, commit yourself to a lifetime  under your Heavenly Father’s control and go forward in full pursuit of a life of holiness. This what it means to “conduct yourself in fear during the time of your stay here on earth.”

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, I confess that as your child, far too often I childishly want you to do my bidding. I embrace the reality that I am here to do your bidding. I believe that my becoming holy in all my behavior is for my highest good and that all you do to bring it about, Lord, is a full expression of your love in my life. Thank you for the work you are doing to prepare me for going forward fully with your plan of a truly holy life. Amen!
